When Your Basement Becomes a Lake: A Guide to Basement Flooding

Unfortunately, it’s pretty easy for water to get into your basement. Most of your pipes are down there, and since it is below ground level, when it rains it is most susceptible to flooding. If you wake up to a lake in your basement, don’t panic. You will need to act quickly to ensure that the basement flooding doesn’t cause more water damage than it already has.

Turn Off the Water if You Can

The first thing you need to do is determine where the water came from in the first place. You can shut off the main water line on your own. It is usually located in your basement or just outside of your home. Basement flooding caused by a storm or natural flooding in your area will need to be waited out. Do not wait for the storm to end before you call your insurance company and a water removal service, such as HS Restoration.

When you are dealing with standing water, you need to take safety into account as well. The water itself could be filled with bacteria depending on the source of the water. Clean water from pipes is usually safe, but sewer line pipes and floodwaters can be harmful to your health. Do not go into flood water without protection.

Also, be extremely careful of electricity in the area. If the floodwaters have come into contact with electrical outlets or devices, it could cause the entire body of water to become electrified.

Call Your Insurance Company and Document the Damage

You will need to take pictures of the damage and call your insurance company before you start to clean up the water. At HS Restoration, we can help document the damage and work with your insurance company to get the claims process started.

In some instances, you may have to leave your home until it’s been cleaned and sanitized. If that is necessary, be sure to keep all receipts of expenses while you are away from your home. These can be helpful for insurance as well.

Remove the Water and Dry the Area

After that, all that is left is to remove the water and dry up the area. HS Restoration uses truck-mounted water removal equipment to remove the water quickly. Then we use a combination of air movers, dehumidifiers, and air scrubbers to dry the entire area.

Mold is the biggest issue with water damage; it can cause structural damage and health issues. The best way to prevent mold growth is to clean up the water as soon as possible. Mold can start to grow in as little as 48 hours, so the sooner everything in your basement can start to dry, the easier it will be to prevent mold growth.

No matter what the cause of the flood is, HS Restoration can help fix it. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our technicians arrive as soon as possible to assess the damage and get to work. This is a stressful time, so let us help make it a little easier. Don’t wait – give us a call today!
